TFSA Contribution Room Calculator
Find out exactly how much you can contribute to your Tax-Free Savings Account. Calculate your lifetime room based on your age, residency, past contributions, and withdrawals.
TFSA room accumulates from the year you turn 18 while a Canadian resident. The TFSA program started in 2009.
Enter all contributions ever made to any TFSA. Withdrawals from prior years restore contribution room.
| Year | Annual Limit | Your Status | Room Earned | Cumulative |
|---|
Important: Your current TFSA balance is not the same as your contribution room. If you contributed $50,000 and it grew to $80,000, you have still only used $50,000 of room. Investment gains do not reduce your room, and investment losses do not restore it.
Note: This calculator estimates your TFSA contribution room based on standard rules. Your actual room may differ due to periods of non-residency, previous over-contributions, or CRA adjustments. For your official TFSA contribution room, check CRA My Account. For tax planning assistance, contact Hart Accounting Services.
How to Use This Calculator
This calculator helps you determine your total TFSA contribution room and how much you can still contribute without triggering the 1% monthly over-contribution penalty.
Entering Your Eligibility Information
Select your year of birth. TFSA contribution room begins accumulating in the year you turn 18. If you were born in 1991, you turned 18 in 2009 (the first year of the TFSA program), so you would have accumulated room from the beginning. If you were born in 2000, you turned 18 in 2018, so your room only began accumulating that year.
Select the year you became a Canadian resident. TFSA room only accumulates during years when you are a Canadian resident. If you were born in Canada and have always lived here, select “2009 or earlier” since that is when the program started. If you immigrated to Canada in 2015, select 2015 as your residency start date. Years when you were not a Canadian resident do not generate TFSA room.
Entering Your TFSA Activity
Enter your total lifetime contributions. This is the cumulative amount you have deposited into all TFSA accounts across all financial institutions since 2009. It is not your current balance. If you contributed $6,000 per year for 10 years, your total contributions would be $60,000 regardless of whether the account has grown to $100,000 or dropped to $40,000.
Enter withdrawals made in prior years only. Withdrawals from your TFSA restore contribution room, but only on January 1 of the following year. If you withdrew $10,000 in 2024, that $10,000 was added back to your room on January 1, 2025. Withdrawals made this year (2025) will not restore room until January 1, 2026. Do not include current-year withdrawals in this field.
Understanding Your Results
The main banner shows your available contribution room. This is the amount you can deposit into your TFSA today without over-contributing. If you have already over-contributed, the banner turns red and shows your excess amount.
The summary cards break down your room calculation into four components. Accumulated Room shows the sum of all annual limits for years when you were eligible (age 18+ and Canadian resident). Prior Withdrawals shows the restored room from withdrawals made before this year. Contributions shows the total amount you have deposited across your lifetime. Available Room shows what remains after subtracting your contributions from your total room.
The Visual Bar
The bar chart provides a quick visual of how much of your room you have used versus how much remains. The navy portion represents contributions already made, and the green portion represents available room. If you have over-contributed, a red portion appears showing the excess.
The Room Calculation Breakdown
The breakdown section shows the math behind your contribution room step by step. Your accumulated room (based on years of eligibility) plus withdrawals from prior years equals your total room. Your total contributions are subtracted to determine what remains.
The Annual Limits Table
The table shows every year from 2009 to the present with the annual TFSA limit for that year, your eligibility status, the room you earned (if eligible), and your cumulative room. Years when you were eligible appear highlighted in green. Years when you were not eligible (either too young or not yet a Canadian resident) appear muted.
The annual limits have varied over the years. The limit was $5,000 from 2009 to 2012, increased to $5,500 in 2013, jumped to $10,000 for 2015 only, returned to $5,500 from 2016 to 2018, increased to $6,000 from 2019 to 2022, rose to $6,500 in 2023, and is $7,000 for 2024 and 2025.
Someone who has been eligible since 2009 and has never withdrawn has accumulated $102,000 in room through 2025.
What Affects Your Contribution Room
Your room increases when a new calendar year begins and the annual limit is added, when withdrawals from prior years restore room on January 1, and when you become a Canadian resident (you begin accumulating room that year).
Your room decreases when you make contributions to any TFSA.
Your room is not affected by investment gains or losses inside your TFSA. If you contribute $50,000 and it grows to $100,000, you have still only used $50,000 of contribution room. If you contribute $50,000 and it drops to $30,000, you have still used $50,000 of room.
Common Scenarios
If you turned 18 after 2009, you missed the early years. Someone born in 2000 who turned 18 in 2018 has accumulated room from 2018 forward, missing nine years of limits from 2009 to 2017.
If you became a Canadian resident after 2009, you missed years of eligibility. An immigrant who arrived in 2020 has only accumulated room from 2020 forward.
If you withdrew and re-contributed in the same year, you may have accidentally over-contributed. A $10,000 withdrawal in March does not create $10,000 of room until January 1 of the following year. Re-contributing that $10,000 in September would be an over-contribution.
Verifying Your Room with the CRA
This calculator provides an estimate based on standard rules. Your official TFSA contribution room is tracked by the CRA based on information reported by financial institutions. To verify your actual room, log in to CRA My Account and look for your TFSA contribution room, or call the CRA at 1-800-267-6999.
Note that there can be a delay between making contributions or withdrawals and seeing them reflected in CRA records, especially early in the calendar year.
Disclaimer
This calculator estimates your TFSA contribution room based on standard eligibility rules and the annual limits set by the Government of Canada. Your actual contribution room may differ due to periods of non-residency, previous over-contribution assessments, transfers between institutions, or CRA adjustments.
Investment gains and losses inside your TFSA do not affect your contribution room. Only actual deposits and withdrawals affect your room.
Withdrawals restore contribution room only on January 1 of the following year. Re-contributing withdrawn amounts in the same calendar year may cause an over-contribution.
