How to Use This Calculator
This calculator determines your RRSP contribution room for the current tax year. Your contribution room is based on your previous year’s earned income, unused room from prior years, and any pension adjustments from workplace retirement plans.
Entering Your Earned Income
Enter your 2024 earned income. This is the income that generates new RRSP room for 2025. Earned income includes employment income (the gross amount on your T4 before deductions), net self-employment income, net rental income, CPP or QPP disability benefits, and taxable alimony or support payments received.
Earned income does not include investment income such as interest, dividends, or capital gains. It also excludes pension income, RRSP or RRIF withdrawals, Old Age Security, and Employment Insurance benefits.
Enter your 2025 expected income. This helps estimate your tax refund if you contribute your full available room. It also helps with planning for next year’s contribution room.
Entering Existing Room and Contributions
Enter your unused contribution room carried forward from previous years. You can find this amount on your most recent Notice of Assessment from the CRA, or by logging into CRA My Account. This is room you earned in previous years but did not use.
Enter any RRSP contributions you have already made in 2025. This includes contributions made from January 1 to today, plus any contributions you made in the first 60 days of 2025 that you are applying to your 2025 deduction rather than 2024.
Select your marginal tax rate. This is used to estimate your potential tax refund. Your marginal rate is the tax rate you pay on your next dollar of income. If you are unsure, select the rate that most closely matches your income level.
Understanding Pension Adjustments
Pension adjustments affect your RRSP room if you participate in a workplace pension plan or deferred profit sharing plan.
The Pension Adjustment (PA) appears in Box 52 of your T4 slip. It represents the value of pension benefits you earned in your employer’s pension plan during the year. Your PA reduces your new RRSP room because the government considers your pension plan as a form of retirement savings.
The Past Service Pension Adjustment (PSPA) occurs when your employer upgrades your pension plan to provide benefits for past years of service. This reduces your RRSP room because you are receiving additional pension benefits.
The Pension Adjustment Reversal (PAR) restores RRSP room when you leave a pension plan before retirement and receive less than the full value of your PA amounts. This can happen when you leave an employer and the pension benefits you actually receive are less than the amounts reported on your past T4 slips.
If you do not have a workplace pension plan, leave all pension adjustment fields at zero.
Understanding the Results
The main banner shows your total available RRSP contribution room for the 2025 tax year. This is the maximum amount you can contribute without incurring over-contribution penalties.
The Summary Cards
The four summary cards break down your total room.
New 2025 Room shows the room generated from your 2024 earned income. This is calculated as 18% of your earned income, up to the annual maximum of $31,560, minus your pension adjustment.
Carryforward shows unused room from previous years. Any room you do not use in a given year carries forward indefinitely until you use it.
Used This Year shows contributions you have already made in 2025.
Room Remaining shows how much more you can contribute. This is your total room minus what you have already contributed.
The Visual Bar
The bar shows a visual representation of your used and available room. The purple section represents contributions already made. The blue section represents room still available for contributions.
The Tax Refund Estimate
The green box shows your estimated tax refund if you contribute your full remaining room. This is calculated by multiplying your available room by your marginal tax rate. The actual refund may vary based on your complete tax situation.
For example, if you have $40,000 of room and a 30% marginal rate, contributing the full amount would reduce your taxable income by $40,000 and save you approximately $12,000 in taxes.
The Calculation Breakdown
The detailed breakdown shows exactly how your room is calculated.
First, your 2024 earned income is multiplied by 18% to determine the basic calculation. This is then compared to the 2025 dollar limit of $31,560. You receive the lesser of the two amounts.
Your pension adjustment from 2024 is subtracted from this amount to determine your new 2025 room.
Next, your unused carryforward room is added, along with any pension adjustment reversal.
Your past service pension adjustment is subtracted, as is any contributions you have already made this year.
The final result is your available contribution room.
The Annual Limits Table
The table shows RRSP dollar limits for recent tax years. The 2025 limit of $31,560 applies to the 2025 tax year and is based on 2024 earned income. The “Income for Max” column shows the earned income required to generate the maximum room (the dollar limit divided by 18%).
Key Dates and Deadlines
The deadline to contribute to your RRSP and claim the deduction on your 2025 tax return is March 1, 2026. Contributions made after this date can only be claimed on your 2026 return.
Contributions made in the first 60 days of a calendar year (January 1 to approximately March 1) can be claimed on either the previous year’s return or the current year’s return. You choose which year to apply the deduction based on your tax planning needs.
The $2,000 Over-Contribution Buffer
The CRA allows a $2,000 over-contribution buffer without penalty. This means you can exceed your contribution limit by up to $2,000 without incurring the 1% monthly penalty tax. However, you cannot claim a deduction for this over-contribution until you have sufficient room in a future year.
Exceeding your limit by more than $2,000 results in a 1% penalty per month on the excess amount until it is withdrawn or absorbed by new contribution room.
Verifying Your Official Room
This calculator provides an estimate based on the information you enter. Your official RRSP deduction limit is determined by the CRA and appears on your Notice of Assessment. You can also view your current limit by logging into CRA My Account.
Discrepancies can occur if there are adjustments to prior year returns, if pension adjustments differ from what was reported, or if contributions were not properly reported by financial institutions.
Disclaimer
This calculator provides an estimate of your RRSP contribution room based on the information you enter. Your actual contribution room is determined by the Canada Revenue Agency and may differ from this estimate due to prior year adjustments, pension plan changes, unreported contributions, or other factors.
Over-contributions exceeding your limit by more than $2,000 are subject to a 1% monthly penalty tax. Before making large contributions, verify your official deduction limit on your CRA Notice of Assessment or through CRA My Account.
