Sales Tax Rates by Province

GST vs HST: GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the federal tax at 5%. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal GST with provincial sales tax into one rate. Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, and PEI use HST. Other provinces charge GST plus a separate PST or QST.

How to Use This Calculator

This calculator helps Canadian businesses and consumers quickly determine sales tax amounts for transactions in any province or territory.

Adding Tax to a Price

Select “Add Tax to Price” when you know the pre-tax amount and need to calculate the final total. This is useful when pricing products or services, preparing invoices, or quoting customers. Enter your base price, select the province where the sale occurs, and the calculator will show you the GST, HST, or PST breakdown along with the final amount your customer will pay.

Removing Tax from a Total

Select “Remove Tax from Total” when you have a receipt or invoice showing the final amount and need to determine the pre-tax price and tax paid. This is helpful for expense tracking, bookkeeping, and preparing your HST returns. The calculator will extract the tax portion and show you the original price before tax was applied.

Understanding Canadian Sales Tax

Canada has two main types of sales tax systems. The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) combines the federal GST with provincial sales tax into a single rate. Ontario charges 13% HST, while the Atlantic provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island) charge 15% HST.

Provinces without HST charge the 5% federal GST separately from their provincial sales tax. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba charge PST at varying rates. Quebec charges its own Quebec Sales Tax (QST) at 9.975% in addition to GST. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have no provincial sales tax, so only the 5% GST applies.

For Businesses Registered for HST

If your business earns more than $30,000 in revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register for a GST/HST account with the Canada Revenue Agency. Once registered, you collect tax on your sales and can claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) to recover the GST/HST you paid on business expenses.

Filing HST returns accurately and on time is essential to avoid penalties and interest charges. The filing frequency (monthly, quarterly, or annually) depends on your business revenue. Hart Accounting Services can help you manage your HST obligations, maximize your ITCs, and ensure compliance with CRA requirements.
